HARVEST HYMN

Jesus, creation sings your glory

by Naomi and Stephen

1. Deep in the earth's darkness,

    new life is awakening

    shoots reaching up to the sunlight.

    Winter is releasing

    seeds which it has sheltered,

    raising them now from their rest.

          Bursting out with artists' flair

          painting colour everywhere;

          Jesus - creation sings your glory!

2. High up in the skies the

    planets in their courses

    orbit the sun, never failing.

    Earth's lengthening days bring

    blossoming and birthing,

    everything springs into life.

          Flowers and fungi, mountains, seas,

          bugs and birds who surf the breeze;

          Jesus - creation sings your glory!

3. Wide open horizons

    shimmer in the heat of

    long lazy days, good for growing.

    Cinnamon and sunflowers,

    blackberries and barley;

    food, plenty for all to share.

          Fruits of forest, sea and land

          are provided by your hand.

          Jesus - creation sings your glory!

4. Long nights are encroaching,

    leaves falling are weaving

    carpets of mulch for the winter.

    Nature decomposing,

    untangling her treasures

    stores them away in the ground.

          Even while the earth may sleep,

          there's a life that runs so deep;

          Jesus - creation sings your glory!

Bridge:      Deep, high, wide, long;

                in love you come.

5. Love for all creation,

    love's pure motivation,

    love for all things bruised and broken,

    love brought you among us,

    walking the earth with us,

    love nailed you onto the tree.

          But earth's death it melts away;

          heaven's life is here to stay.

          Jesus - creation sings your glory!

About the Hymn

We wrote this hymn for a competition.... we didn't win!!  But we still love it, and want to offer it to the churches to sing something new for Harvest.

Each verse is a celebration of one of the seasons, until the final verse is a celebration of Jesus.

We feel that every harvest hymn should have some reference to decomposing, mulch and fungi.... nature is simply awesome in its diversity and its ability to live and recreate, in that it glorifies God.
